Physical Symptoms of Depression

0% of depressed patients experience fatigue. Nearly 80% have difficulty sleeping.

More than half of patients with depression experience some sexual dysfunction.

A large international study found that 43% experience general aches and pains... four times more than those without depression.

Although most people with depression have some physical symptoms, few discuss them with their doctor, a survey by the U.K. Depression Alliance recently found.

A previous study by the same group found that most doctors did not explain to patients that these kind of physical symptoms could be related to or caused by depression.

In this survey 99% of patients complained of some physical symptoms of depression, and 85% believed their quality of life would greatly improve if the symptoms could be managed.

The obvious advantage in getting properly diagnosed and treated is not only that depression is very treatable, but also that many of these symptoms will disappear or diminish with treatment.

Some Physical Symptoms of Depression:

  • Fatigue

  • Disrupted sleep

  • Poor appetite/weight loss

  • General aches and pains

  • Sexual dysfunction/loss of libido

Please note that these symptoms are also some of the symptoms of prolonged stress and anxiety. In addition, they are all associated with prolonged excessive levels of cortisol.
