Clinical Depression Symptoms
Not sure if you have clinical depression? Check your symptoms below.
Depression falls into three different categories. The range of symptoms and their severity will be somewhat different for each sufferer.
-
In major depression, also known as clinical depression, people experience a sad mood or loss of interest or pleasure in activities for at least 2 weeks. In addition, they have at least four other symptoms of depression. Major depression can be mild, moderate, or severe. If it is not treated, it can last for 6 months or more. An estimated 19 million American adults are living with major depression.
-
Dysthymia, commonly called mild depression is more chronic than major depression. In dysthymia, people experience a depressed mood for at least 2 years accompanied by at least two other symptoms of depression.
-
Bipolar disorder, also called manic depression, causes periods of depressive symptoms that alternate with periods of mania. Manic symptoms include an abnormally high level of excitement and energy, racing thoughts, and behavior that is impulsive and inappropriate.
